Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a staunch sanyāsī (renunciant), and strictly followed the rules of the sanyās āśhram (renounced order of life). Yet he held the devotion of the gopīs, the damsels of Braj, to be the highest sentiment of devotion, and he relished savoring and hearing about the nectar of gopī bhāv.
